2020 was a hell of a year. Unfortunately, time has seemed to mesh so well together, that even years after, it still feels like we’re right in the thick of it. Everyone has their own experience of what it was like for them during the pandemic—during lock-down and isolation and quarantine.
For me, my best friend ended up getting sick with COVID-19. So much so that she had to be hospitalized for a couple of months (or at least it felt that long). For a while, things were looking really terrible, and hospital stays and medication aren’t cheap. Especially in this country. So, in order to help raise some money for her treatments, in the month of June, I created a series of pride paintings. Each is based on either all of the colors in the pride flag or colors that make up the individual flags within the community (lesbian flag, bi flag, trans flag, etc.).
I was incredibly pleased with how quickly they sold (about within an hour of posting), which meant I was able to get enough money to help pay for a big treatment that my friend needed. I did end up keeping one of the paintings, though. It was my favorite out of all of them but also serves as a reminder that there are people out there willing to help others they don’t even know, at times when it feels like there’s no hope.
